We here link to all the sections of this classic tale by Honoré de Balzac, side-by-side with a translation from the equally dead-and-gone Ernest Dowson. In the rarest of spots, we tweaked the translation.

What can we say? Someday everyone dies, though it is hard to believe when you feel well and the sky rests high in the sky over your energetic, industrious, forward-yearning township.
